done!
Posted: May 28th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: things I spin | 2 Comments »When I say “done,” I of course mean two things – one, I’m done my semester, which means finally having more time to knit all of the things I’ve got on my List (it’s pretty long). And, two, I finished spinning up the Waterloo Wools Shetland top I bought at the Frolic earlier this month.
You may recall, when I started out, it looked like this.
Now, it looks like this.
It’s spindle-spun, and I was shooting for something like fingering weight, but after swatching with it a little bit I feel like it’s closer to a dk/worsted. I’m still pretty inconsistent – I’m trying not to think of how inconsistent, when I look at these photos all I can see are the parts I’d like to improve for next time. There are parts of the skein that are big and fluffy and almost chunky-weight, and parts that are a little overspun and fingering-weight. But I’m better, and the thick/thin is slowly evening out the more that I spin, and the better I get at estimating how I need to make my singles.
I also taught myself to chain ply, mostly using this video. I think I like it better than 2-plying, but I’m also pretty sure I’m too inexperienced with spinning to really have a solid opinion one way or the other.
Still, I had a good time spinning this, and I’m prouder than I can put into words at having made yarn, from scratch, that I really wouldn’t mind knitting with. (No, seriously. I was this close to texting pictures of it to my mom.)

Yay handspun!
Sigh. My spinning has lain dormant for months. I need to find out if it will have me back…
[...] It’s wildly, wildly overspun (I took pictures of the “nice” side on purpose, the other half of the skein is full of bits twisted over on itself), but look how nice it looks! It’s so much more even than my last handspun! [...]
