Remember these?
We’ve had quite a few “please sit quietly while I read from these handouts” lecturers in the past week – fantastic, brilliant lecturers, I need to add – so I’ve been moving along on my in-class knitting at an alarming rate. They’re not quite done yet – if you squint, you can see the unfinished heel of sock #2 in the background, there.
I’m still not quite sure how I feel about these socks. I find them almost offensively orange-and-pink, and am a little miffed at the pooling. I mean, I love rainbow colours as much as anybody else, but I like to space out my pinks and oranges and reds with cool colours (I have a serious thing for blues and greens and purples) instead of putting them all together, like this yarn seemed prone to do. Also, I’m not going to lie – they are a pain in the ass to photograph.
But then, I’ve been getting a lot of compliments on them, which has honestly shocked me. I assumed that everyone found them eye-searingly bright, but apparently not! These socks aren’t just a warm way to keep my hands busy and my feet warm – evidently, they’re also a lesson in diversity.

I’ve cast on another pair of socks! It’s been a long while since I’ve had the patience for small needles, but I had this yarn just sitting in my living room, and now seemed as good a time as any to use it. It looks. . .a lot better in the skein. The skein is gorgeous. The finished product, or at least the first sock of the pair, is sort of so bright you can see them from space, and pools like the dickens, but whatever. It’s got character.

Now, this second picture requires a bit of explanation. One of the things I’ve started doing since school began in September – thanks, mostly, to the incredible amount of information we’re expected to assimilate – is dividing lectures into two categories: Take Notes and Don’t Take Notes.
The Take Notes lectures happen pretty much every day, at least once a day, and they’re easy to get through because I can keep myself busy writing things down. The Don’t Take Notes lectures. . .I usually make it about halfway through before I start to nod off. It is a fatal character flaw on my part. So I’ve started bringing my knitting to class on days when I know I’ll be having one of these lectures (mostly seminars and guest lectures – stuff we have to pay attention to, but isn’t testable.). How long do they usually last? About four and a half centimetres.
