Well, it’s that time of year again. The time when I stock up on coffee, retreat into my apartment, and start a very serious battle of wills with a stack of paper that looks a lot like this. (Fun-size box of Smarties for scale, obviously.)

Now that school’s back in session, I’m back to having to write a major exam once a month (give or take). Unfortunately, this month I’ve also been struck down with a pretty fierce cold, which is doing terrible things to my ability to concentrate on my notes, so my knitting progress has taken a nose-dive.

However, the past few days have been a sudden, bracing leap into autumn, and it’s too cold for me to not be knitting something. So I finally sat down, did some math, and started my fall sweater, which is basically the knitting equivalent of autopilot. Garter stitch on 5.5mm needles, which feel ginormous after knitting with teeny yarn on 4mm needles for most of the last year. It’s extraordinarily comforting.

Whoa. You guys, even I’m surprised at how fast this sweater is going. Less than two weeks of knitting, and I’m already onto the second sleeve.

Part of this is because this one, unlike my last sweater, is several thousand miles of plain stockinette, so I’ve been able to take it to school and knit during class. (To keep me focused – seven straight hours of opthalmology is not my favourite thing in the world.)

Working on the sleeves, I gave up on the original Owls pattern almost entirely, going back to Elizabeth Zimmerman’s EPS method because it makes them fit beautifully. I always waffle, when I make sleeves, over whether or not to put in thumb holes (because I’m the type of person who enjoys sticking my thumbs through the sleeves in my sweater and looking like a sullen emo kid), but I decided not to for this one. Thumb holes are for hoodies, not pseudo-indie-kid round-necked owl cardigans. Probably.

Oh, and I’m still in love with this yarn, especially in garter stitch. I’m suddenly starting to really, really appreciate the appeal of working with Lorna’s Laces’ products.

It’s not much, but it’s a start.

At some point I want to blog about all of the changes I’m making to Owls, because there are a lot, but for now I’m just too excited about omgomgomg MY SWEATER to write up a post like that. The first bit of the hem (garter stitch, instead of ribbed), on top of my crazy-over-the-top pattern notes.

I feel like I should also mention just how much I love this yarn. Because really, it’s effing beautiful. Look at it! It’s grey, but it’s got subtle green tones and subtle violet tones, and it’s so soft I could cheerfully roll around in it like Scrooge McDuck. Definitely an excellent irresponsible-yarn-purchasing decision.
