I’m going to let you guys in on a secret: I am not actually scared of cutting my steeks on this sweater. (For non-knitters: I set aside stitches on the sweater I knit like a pullover, and the plan is to stabilize them, then cut up the middle to turn it into a cardigan. This is an actual knitting technique.) In fact, I am totally the opposite of scared. I can’t WAIT. I want to cut all the steeks right now, because all I can think is “SURGERY? On my KNITTING? This is the BEST THING EVER.”

(. . .I am a med student, if that makes it less weird.)

However, I am also adult enough to realize that I should take a moment to make sure I’ve got it right before I run at my sweater with a pair of scissors. Which is why I crocheted (for stability) and cut (for fun!) this practice steek last night on my swatch hat. The big steek on my sweater is all crocheted and ready to go.

This is going to be fun.

Extreeeeme closeup of the stitch pattern for my hat, taken while it was still in progress. I’ve finished the knitting, and am wearing it all over the place now that it’s nice and cool and fall is in the air. One of these days, I may actually enlist someone to take some pictures of it while it’s on my head.

(Well, okay. There is one picture that you can find on Ravelry, here, but I don’t like that picture of me.)

Progress photo of the jaunty, floppy beret I made myself. The pattern is the Mary Jane Hat/Pithy Hat – this is the Mary Jane version, which makes me feel kind of like a superhero. Or, I guess, a superhero’s girlfriend, which in a way is a more powerful position.

This stitch pattern is gorgeous, but was honestly kind of a pain in the ass to knit – it’s easy enough to memorize, just alternating k2togs or p2togs and yarn overs, but it’s the kind of stitch pattern where I have to actually look at my knitting every so often. I tried taking it in to knit during one of our medical imaging lectures – we have to pay attention but are not supposed to take notes, which means there is roughly a 90% chance I will fall asleep about a half hour in – and it was not the best project. It worked okay, but I couldn’t keep my eyes on the presentation the whole time like I could have if I was just working on plain stockinette.
