These are not the pretty cookies you bake and take home to your mama. These are the cookies you find the recipe for at four in the morning, drunk in an alleyway, and figure, “What the hell. Nobody will know.” They are ugly whores of cookies, ladies and gentleman – but they taste fantastic. (Incorporate that tidbit into the extended metaphor as you will.)

In essence, they are espresso brownies with mini chocolate chips and walnuts chucked onto a cookie tray. I decided, about one cookie tray later, that I didn’t like the way that made them all weird and pancakey-looking, so I baked the rest of the batch in muffin tins. (If you grease the tins, the cookies will come out of them prettier) This is an absolutely delicious idea, enough to overlook the fact that these cookies are, you know. Homely.

Okay. So, technically I didn’t so much make this pie as I did sit around the kitchen making polite conversation while my mother made it. But I did offer to make it. And I think that’s half the battle, anyway.

Recipe from Ye Olde Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book, which isn’t exactly the fanciest cookbook ever written, but gets the job done if you want to make any of the old-fashioned basics.

If you’re awesome enough to be Canadian this weekend, Happy Thanksgiving. If you’re American, don’t worry – you’ll get your turn to have Thanksgiving soon.

One of the things I’ve been really working on since I got back to Canada has been cooking food that is healthy and delicious, instead of just delicious. Basically, me and my copy of Bonnie Stern’s Best of Heartsmart Cooking have rekindled our relationship.

Case in point: dinner last night, Sweet Chili Chicken (page 239). The recipe is not too difficult (although, like a lot of her recipes, it involves a fair amount of chopping that has to be done before you put anything in the frying pan. It’s not too spicy, and I made extra sauce so that it would go well on rice, plus it travels well for lunch the next day.
