remember the sound of your november downtown

Alright. So one of the things I’ve decided to do this month – in addition to a lot of schoolwork, which obviously takes priority in the event that I can’t actually find the time to do both – is NaKniSweMo. Basically, it’s a knitting companion project to NaNoWriMo – the idea behind the original is to write a novel (roughly 50,000 words) during the month of November. The idea behind NaKniSweMo is to knit a sweater (roughly 50,000 stitches) during the month of November. I. . .have no idea if this will actually pan out or not.

But anyway. Even if I don’t, the sweater I’m planning on starting this month is the Saddle-Shoulder Aran Cardigan, made internet-famous by brooklyn tweed’s brilliant iteration. The first step, as in anything, is a swatch, which is what this is. The idea behind this kind of sweater is that you knit up a “swatch hat” (I took that suggestion literally, because I like hats) with all of the different cables you’re going to use, wash the swatch, and then use that to plan out the way you’re going to knit the cardigan.

It’s a little daunting having to put this much planning into a project, but I think it’ll work out. Looking at the pattern and reading things to the effect of “put whatever cable you feel like using on the arms” and “knit it until it’s long enough,” I realize that’s pretty much how I like to knit things anyway, so. I’m optimistic.
